In Tibet, this mantra is on everyone's lips, written or engraved on the flat stones, placed in prayer wheels. It is recommended for any situation of danger, suffering, to help those who suffer and the deceased. But it is of course more effective when it is part of the practice of a complete sadhana of the bodhisattva of compassion.

The Mantra of six syllables Mani

(Tib Yig-drug) In Tibet, the most used mantra of Avalokitesvara is OM MANI PADME HOUNG, often followed by an HRIH, the seed syllable of the Padma family of compassion.

The six syllables of the mantra have an important meaning in relation to the six Buddhas.

The six Mouni working in the six destinies and passions :

OM (white), related to Ratnasambhava and Indra, purifies the pride and the falls as well as the destiny of the Deva.

MA (green), related to Amoghasidhi and Vemacitra, purifies the jealousy, discord and destiny of the asura.

NI (Yellow), related to Vajradhara and Shakyamuni, purifies ignorance, the four sufferings and the human destiny.

PAD (blue), related to Vairocana and Dhruvasimha, purifies stupidity and mental darkness as well as the animal domain.

ME (red), related to Amitabha and Jvalamukha, purifies the greed, hunger and destiny of the pretas.

HOUNG (black), linked to Aksobhya and Dharmaraja, purifies anger, hate and hell.
